The Sunflower Bunch: Dawlish’s Dedicated Cancer Support Group
The Sunflower Bunch began life as the Dawlish Cancer Support Group, started by local resident Sue Thompson following her own experience with breast cancer. Over the years, it has grown into a welcoming network that offers practical and emotional backing to anyone touched by cancer in the area.
Members share stories, advice, and companionship in a relaxed setting. The group covers all types of cancer and extends its reach to family members and carers who need understanding or a listening ear. A small committee keeps things running smoothly, organising gatherings based on what members suggest.
Sunflower Beach Hut
One standout feature is the beach hut at Coryton Cove, relocated to provide a quiet seaside spot for respite. Anyone affected by cancer can book it for a peaceful day by the water, offering a change of scene away from daily pressures.
The group maintains strong ties with other local services, such as Dawlish Community Transport for getting around. It also connects people to broader resources like the Force Cancer support centre at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.
Personal touches make a difference here. For instance, member Val O’Riley offers one-to-one chats or home visits for those dealing with oral cancer, sharing practical tips on managing speech, eating, and confidence issues.
Activities focus on simple connection – tea, cake, and conversation – creating space for mutual support without formality. The emphasis stays on empathy from those who have walked similar paths.
