Red Rock

Red Rock

Stretching along the coastline between Dawlish town and Dawlish Warren, Red Rock Beach offers a striking mix of golden sands and dramatic red sandstone cliffs. The prominent Langstone Rock marks its northern end, creating natural arches and caves that shift with the tides. Trains rumble along the sea wall behind the beach, adding a rhythmic backdrop to the waves crashing below.

The beach forms part of the longer sweep from Dawlish’s seafront promenade, where the path runs parallel to the railway line. Walking the full length reveals changing views of the red breccia rock formations, shaped over millions of years. At low tide, more sand exposes itself, opening up space for strolling or simply sitting against the cliffs. The water shelves deeply in places, making it suitable for swimming when conditions allow, though care is needed with currents.

The red hues of the cliffs contrast sharply with the sea on clearer days, providing a vivid natural display.

Rock pooling draws many to the bases of the cliffs, where small marine life hides in crevices. The area ties into the South West Coast Path, linking easily to Dawlish Warren’s nature reserve or the town’s central beach. Birdlife thrives here, with gulls and occasional waders along the shoreline.

No direct facilities sit on the beach itself, keeping it quieter than busier resort spots nearby. The combination of geological interest and coastal access makes it a solid choice for those seeking unspoiled stretches along this part of Devon.
