Forest Fungi

Forest Fungi sits on the edge of Dawlish Warren, where Scott Marshall turned a personal health challenge into a thriving business. Diagnosed with cancer in 2013, he delved into the world of mushrooms during his recovery, drawn to types like Shiitake, Reishi, and Maitake for their potential immune benefits.

What began as home experiments soon evolved into commercial growing, with Marshall leaving a stable job in furniture to focus on this venture alongside his wife Becca. By replicating Japanese autumn conditions in climate-controlled rooms, they achieved their first successful Shiitake crop that year, marking the start of organic, chemical-free production.

Over time, the farm expanded to cultivate up to eight specialist species, including King Oyster, Yellow Oyster, Grey Oyster, Hen of the Woods, Nameko, and Lion’s Mane. Output now exceeds 500 kilos weekly, supplying top chefs such as Michael Rignall and Michael Caines, plus direct deliveries to around 70 customers.

A 2020 appearance on James Martin’s TV show boosted online sales during lockdown, highlighting the farm’s innovative approach. Operations remain carbon-neutral, using minimal electricity and sending no waste to landfill, with all compost recycled locally.

The on-site cafe makes the most of these home-grown mushrooms, incorporating them into various dishes while ensuring options for those less keen on fungi.

Fresh, organic ingredients from nearby suppliers form the basis of the menu, with highlights like garlic mushrooms on toast or inventive omelettes showcasing the produce’s flavour. Outdoor seating adds to the relaxed atmosphere, and the venue welcomes dogs, fitting its rural setting.

Adjoining the cafe, the farm shop provides a broad selection of goods, mostly sourced from Devon and the South West.

Shoppers find cheeses, pies, breads, preserves, meats, dairy items, fruits, vegetables, chocolates, sweets, and gifts. Fresh and dried mushrooms take centre stage, available for purchase alongside flavoured oils and other speciality items. Guided tours offer a peek into the ‘Shroom Rooms’, revealing the meticulous growing process.

Beyond sales, Forest Fungi engages the community through its website and social channels, sharing updates on new harvests and cafe specials. The location at Timaru Gardens, near holiday parks, draws a steady flow of custom, blending agricultural roots with hospitality.

The place rates highly with many reviews. Customers often praise the fresh, tasty food, beautiful presentation, and friendly staff, especially for breakfast and brunch items featuring mushrooms. Common themes include the quality of local produce in the shop and the welcoming atmosphere. A few mention limited mushroom variety for sale at times or higher costs, but positive feedback dominates, with repeat visits frequently noted.
